Designing for a Client Brief

The Overall Project:
This is an ongoing project where I have been tasked with designing a new logo for a local DJ. I am on a contract basis where I design work for the upcoming events or new album releases.
Who is CheekySneeze?
CheekySneeze is a local DJ and electronic music producer. The journey of CheekySneeze started in April of 2019, having entered a local DJ competition called YourShot, with given a comprehensive 10-week course of the fundamentals of DJing the first gig was played at Birdee’s. From there the performing continued, having played multiple nights at Woolly Mammoth and the Ipswich Hotel.  CheekySneeze unlike a majority of local DJ’s plays modern electronic music in the genres of dubstep and drum and bass. With having a love of bass music and dubstep, CheekySneeze took to expanding his performance by producing music, currently sitting on his first unreleased Drum and Bass track, however, more is definitely in the works.

The Design Process

The Problem: 
CheekySneeze has signaled that he would like a new logo that can better connect with his values and what kind of music he produces. He believes that his current logo (below) doesn't show it. Many graphic elements and characteristics of the original logo I found that can be further improved. 
 
1st:
The logo contains two contradicting fonts which can make the logo feel messy as it is trying to multiple elements into one form.
2nd:
The 'SNEEZE' font has a liquid style to it, which detracts from the experience of looking at the font.  
3rd:
The two triangular shapes at the top and bottom of the lettering don't seem to feel necessary or fit the original logo as well.
4th:
The logo is missing an image, so people can determine the CheekySneeze from an image rather than having his full name as his logo. Having an image can simplify and ease when promoting new albums and releases, as can be easier to stand out from the rest. 
5th:
There's no part of the logo that symbolizes 'CheekySneeze', having an image to do this will fit a lot better for the DJ.

The Research:
Started off with taking values from his current logo with the drooling font, being able to combine it to one object to relate to. My main goals in this project were to make the logo into having 1 font, condensing the logo to be smaller, use objects that can better relate to his name. While also having a logo that can symbolize 'CheekySneeze'.

The Solution:
It was found from research that 'CheekySneeze' had a big passion for pokemon in his daily life that he would like to take pride in. So I looked into a few characters that could encompass the attitudes of cheeky. A pokemon I found does offer a cheeky smile, so I got inspiration from that simple and adjusted it further for a more 3D effect.

The logo design that was chosen by the client aimed to encompass the values of his name in being cheeky. But also be out there in terms of its form design so it can add new principles to current DJ logos

Wallpaper Design

What I Learnt:
From this project so far, I've learnt new ways of understanding and grasping a design/ design vision that the user doesn't know what they want, without visualising it. I also learnt new ways of creating logos in Adobe Illustrator, while working within designing for Facebook and Instagram format.  

Further Album Releases:

Further work entailed being contracted to design for two new album releases. The first album wanted to symbolize the trend of the COVID-19 Pandemic, where CheekySneeze wanted the logo and have a wallpaper that can showcase his transition to making music that people can listen to while in lockdown.

This was a difficult project as I didn't want to be offensive to people who were affected by the pandemic but also wanted to show a cool side to his new album in symbolising the pandemic.

Wallpaper Design

The second release was meant to symbolize the return of normality after lockdown. This entailed having a peaceful/relaxing design that people can listen to when going back to work or university. This design led to going back to the original logo but incorporating sophisticated but calming gradient colours that can be used in the background. This is to grab the users attention immediately with the bright colours, but makes them want to analyse further into the types of colours used.

The third release was meant to symbolize the connection we have to nature. This entailed having to create cover art that reflects nature while showing off a new symbol that is pleasant to look at and doesn't distract from the background image. The client wanted the background image to reflect a night sky that can allow a logo to be seen on top of it. This design invloved to crerating new cover art from scratch using to represent 'prism' (what the album is called). This is to grab the users attention immediately with the bright colours but makes them want to analyse further into the types of colours used.
